Great Things He Has Done

READ : Joshua 24:1-13

Joshua began his farewell sermon by reminding Israel of its history. The emphasis is on what God did for them and the fact that He had done it. After the long years of conquest, it would have been tempting for people, especially the soldiers, to think back over their victories and boast of them as their own achievements. God, who was with them in battle, had given them the dominion they now enjoyed. The challenge was to remember this, and to pray that the Lord of Hosts would be with them yet. Without Him, they would be nothing.

It is important to remember what we would be if God had not graciously chosen us to be His people. What would we be without His loving grace in our lives? What kind of problems would we have today if God were not present with us to give us discernment, wisdom, strength and courage? What would our world look like today if God had not sent His Son to enter our lives? What hope for the future would there be without His promise of eternal life?

It took God’s grace to raise us up with Christ and seat us with Him in the heavenly realms. Looking back in this way should remind us of how humble we ought to be before a mighty, holy and sovereign God.

“Bless the Lord, O my soul, all my inmost being, praise his holy name,” for You have done great things in me. I thank and praise You. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
