Back to School

September is the traditional month for school to start and church education programs to begin anew. Most people get a quiver of anticipation and resolve to have good attendance records and study habits.

Parents delude themselves into believing they will have more time once the children are off to school. That rarely happens. The many “yeses” one said when asked to sign up for various programs combine with home and business commitments to make one even busier. Add to that a modern-day emphasis on attending every extra-curricular event one’s child is in and it seems there is no time to sleep or think.

One of the first activities to be eliminated, it often seems, is quiet time with our Teacher and His Word. Personal prayers and Bible study sessions seem less important. We think, “God will understand. He knows my limitations.”

Jesus doesn’t buy into this reasoning. When Martha complained about her workload and asked Him to send Mary to help her, He said, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and upset about many things, but only one thing is needed. Mary [who was sitting and listening to Jesus] has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.” In your life, is there time to spend with Jesus?

Dear Lord Jesus, just as You guarded Mary’s time with You, help me to be faithful and firm in finding time to pray and study Your Word. Amen.
