READ : Matthew 9:1-13
The elementary class that I help with was planning to go on a field trip to the Monterey Bay Aquarium. At first, I decided that I would not go because if I did, it would mean someone would have to take time helping me rather then spending time with the students. The week before the trip, I wrote a note explaining this to the teacher. In response, he said, “You are part of our class. If you don’t go, something will be missing. There is no question. You are going!”
Being included by the teacher reminded me again that God includes each of us in His family. We read that Jesus called a “sinner” to follow Him. Matthew was hated because he was a tax collector. Like most tax collectors in those days, he probably cheated and stole from the taxpayers. Knowing all this, Jesus still included him and called him to be one of His followers. Why did Jesus call this sinner Matthew to follow Him? Because that is the very reason why Jesus came to earth to call sinners like Matthew, you and me to follow Him and to include us in His family.
It cost our Savior everything to make us part of His family. Jesus left His throne in heaven and humbled Himself to be born a human being. He died a painful death on a cross. When I think of Jesus’ crucifixion and all He went through, I marvel that He thought me worth including.
Loving Lord, we stand in awe that You love us. We thank and praise You for Your love. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
