Keeping Our Attention on Him

READ : Luke 10:38-42

Part of my responsibility as an aide in a special education class is to keep a student with attention deficit disorder working on his assignments. It is hard for him to settle down and get to work. I am constantly reminding him to stick to the task at hand.

At times I feel like I have attention deficit disorder when it comes to my relationship with Christ. I find it easier to do other activities rather than spending time with the Lord in devotions. Sometimes, when I’m reading my Bible or praying, my mind wanders in several directions. When I neglect my devotions or my mind wanders, I feel guilty that I haven’t given Him my full attention.

When I am having trouble turning my thoughts on God, I take comfort in the story of Mary and Martha. Martha couldn’t keep her attention on the Lord either. In response, Jesus didn’t get angry with her or order her to come and sit at His feet. Instead, He just gently explained that spending time with Him would be a better choice.

When we are having trouble keeping our attention on Him, we shouldn’t be afraid to ask Him for help. He will not banish us from His presence. Our Lord loves to spend time with His children. When we ask Him, He will help us to quiet our minds and center our thoughts so we can spend time with Him.

Lord, when we get distracted from You, help us to center our thoughts. In our Savior’s name. Amen.
