READ : Psalm 18:1-19
I love to swim, but I cannot let my head go under water. If it does go under, I panic because I can’t control my breathing in the pool. To insure that my head stays above water, I rely on a very helpful life preserver.
In this Psalm, David is praising the Lord for saving him from sinking in battle. The Lord helped David defeat the Moabites, the Arameans and Hadadezer, king of Zobah (2 Samuel 8) as well as many others. And let’s not forget the giant Goliath. In all of his battles, God was David’s shield, his salvation and his stronghold, his reliable life preserver.
Few of us have literal battles to fight or a nine-foot giant to slay. Yet all of us face difficult situations. It is then that we must rely on God. He will always be there to help us through. In Isaiah our Lord promises, “When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you” (Is. 43:2a).
When I swim, I have to rely on my life preserver to hold me up. When we face life’s turbulent waters, there is no need to panic. We have a God who holds us up. He is our reliable life preserver. He will never let us sink in the rough waters of life.
Thank You, heavenly Father, for being our reliable life preserver. Help us rely on You more and more every day. For Jesus’ sake. Amen.
