The Radience of God's Glory

Harvey Heneveld

READ : Hebrews 1:1-9

This passage teaches us important things about Jesus. It tells us that Jesus is “the radiance of God’s glory, the exact representation of his being.” When we look into the sky we see the red, round ball of the sun. Yet it is not the sun itself that we see. It is the sun’s visible rays of light that our eyes see. What the sun is inside itself cannot be seen by us.

This helps us understand who Jesus is. Jesus made God visible. If we want to know what God is like, we must look at Jesus. Just as the visible rays of the sun exactly represent what the sun is, so Jesus exactly represents who God is. The sun’s rays come from the sun and are the product of the sun’s substance. They are the sun made visible to us. Jesus came from the Father. He is God made visible.

As there is much more to the sun than our eyes can see, there is much more to God than we can know. But all that we need to know has been shown to us in Jesus. As we benefit daily from the sun’s power which makes all life on earth possible, so we benefit daily from the power of God given to us in Jesus Christ. We don’t even have to understand it all. We can’t. That’s one of the reasons we are saved by grace.

Limitless power was born as a gentle baby. Eternal majesty ex pressed itself in a human infant. Oh the wonder of the God who came to us in Jesus!

As we celebrate Jesus’ birth, fill our souls with the wonder of Your love, O God. In His name. Amen.
