The Big Choice

LeRoy Koopman

READ : John 8:48-59

“Whoever keeps my word,” said Jesus, “will never see death” (v. 51).

Jesus was claiming that he was the giver of everlasting life. He is now reinforcing his previous claims that he was the bread of life, the water of life, and the light of the world. More than that, Jesus was claiming that he pre-dated Abraham by at least 2100 years before! “Before Abraham was I am” (v. 58).

Now the religious leaders were completely convinced about what they had suspected all along (v. 48). Jesus was completely wacko!

C.S. Lewis, in Mere Christianity, said it best:

A man who was merely a man and said the sort of things

Jesus said would not be a great moral teacher. He would

either be a lunatic on a level with the man who says he

is a poached egg or else he would be the Devil of Hell.

You must make your choice. Either this man was, and is,

the Son of God: or else a madman or something worse. You

can shut Him up for a fool, you can spit at Him and kill

Him as a demon; or you can fall at His feet and call Him

Lord and God. But let us not come with any patronizing

nonsense about His being a great human teacher.

Lord, help me to make the radical and inevitable choice concerning Jesus.
