Pleasing Him in Every Way: Thankfulness

1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

While on a short-term missions trip, Pastor Jack was leading worship at a leper colony on the island of Tobago. He asked if anyone had a song request. A woman who had been facing away from the pulpit turned around.

“It was the most hideous face I had ever seen,” Pastor Jack said. “The woman’s nose and ears were entirely gone. Leprosy had destroyed her lips as well. She lifted a finger-less hand in the air and asked, ‘Can we sing Count Your Many Blessings?’”

Overcome with emotion, Pastor Jack left the service. A team member followed him and said, “Jack, I guess you’ll never be able to sing that song again.” “Yes,” he replied, “but never again in the same way.”

Thankfulness is the ability to count what we have, not what we don’t have. In addition to bearing fruit (v. 10) and receiving power (v. 11), thankfulness is another sign of God’s work in us.

We, who have been given access to the riches of heaven, who have received grace from a Father we had rejected, how are we at showing thanks for his great gift every day of our lives?

Father, you have given me more than I deserve. Forgive me when I display a thankless heart. Amen.
