Pleasing Him in Every Way: Being Qualified

David Sterk

READ : Colossians 1:12-14
Titus 3:3-8

Bill wanted to get into college. He was willing to do anything to be admitted. His desire and work ethic were so focused that he worked two jobs just to afford college. So the day he received the letter that said, “we are pleased to award you a full-ride scholarship,” he didn’t believe it. So he found a third job to earn enough money for college.

That makes about as much sense as Christians trying to earn their way into heaven when they’ve already been given a “scholarship.” Notice who Paul says has been qualifying believers to share in “the inheritance of the saints in the kingdom of light.” God makes us fit for the kingdom, not ourselves. We will see this theme repeatedly during this month.

Mark Twain said it well, “Heaven goes by favor. If it went by merit, you would stay out and your dog would go in.”

This is a time also for you to analyze your activities for God. “Am I still trying to do good things in order for God to accept me? Or am I loving God and living a godly life because I am thankful?”
