Hold out your hands. Place them together, palms up to make a trough. Have someone drop a marble into your cupped hands. Drop another into your hands. And another. And another until your hands are full and can’t hold any more. Do you have them all under your control? Good. Then drop another marble and watch it fall to the ground. Now, if only one falls out you can’t say that you have control of the marbles. Because one of them is now out of your control.
Here’s the point: Jesus is the one who holds the world together. Paul is talking about Jesus’ sovereignty. There is never anything out of his control. He holds it all together.
Not only did Jesus create the world, he also maintains it. He is the one who keeps it going. If he would ever glance away the world would stop. But that will never happen because he is the one who holds it together when we mess up.
Have you ever felt that Jesus has taken his eyes off you? Never fear. He who holds the world also holds you. I know whom I have believed and am convinced that he is able to guard what I have entrusted to him for that day!
Father, please remind me today that there is never anything that can happen to me that will take you by surprise. Amen.
