Who Is Jesus? The Reconciler

David Sterk

READ : Colossians 1:19-20
Luke 15:1-7

Joe and Bob have known each other all their lives. They have the same friends. They support the same causes. They go to the same church. But they haven’t said a word to each other in three years. Three years ago Joe and Bob had a fight with each other and neither will make the first move to reconcile. So they simply ignore each other whenever they have to be together. At least it’s been quiet. But do Joe and Bob have peace? Of course not. The war is still on.

Isn’t that the usual attitude we have toward God? “God, if you don’t bother me, I promise I won’t bother you.” But I am so glad that God is not content with a cease fire in his relationship with us. His attitude toward us is “I will never stop reaching out to you, my child.” And that is the essence of the gospel. Some people don’t know that there is a difference between religion and Christianity. Religion is the story of our search for God. Christianity is the story of God’s search for us.

How would you label your relationship with God right now? Is it a cease fire? Or is it a heart-warming, all-encompassing peace? Is today the time for you to accept God’s generous offer of friendship and acceptance?

Father, I am tired of running away from you. I ask you to give me peace through Jesus Christ. Amen.
