What Is the Gospel? Do Versus Done

Ephesians 2:8-10

Bill Hybels and his wife were guests on the boat of some new friends. One man asked, “Bill before you leave, can you answer a question? I’ve always wanted to ask what it means to become a Christian. Could you tell us?”

How would you answer? What does it mean to become a Christian? Stop reading now. Fold this devotional over and discuss your response.

Here’s how Hybels responded. “The difference between religion and Christianity is that religion is spelled ‘D-O’, because it consists of the things people do to try to somehow gain God’s forgiveness and favor. But you never know when you’ve done enough. But thankfully, Christianity is spelled differently. It’s spelled ‘D-O-N-E’ which means that what we could never do for ourselves, Christ has already done for us. To become a real Christian is to humbly receive God’s gift of forgiveness and to commit to following his leadership. When we do that, he adopts us into his family, and begins to change us from the inside out”

Father, what you have done for me is incredible. I commit myself to following your leadership from now on. Amen.
