What Is Love?

READ : Psalm 36:5-12

Why do marriages fail? One important reason is that many people haven’t the foggiest notion what real love is. Verse 5 says, “Your love, O Lord, reaches to the heavens.” The word for love here emphasizes loyalty. God is loyal to us. We must be loyal to him and to each other. God has made a covenant with us. He has promised us certain blessings, and he will keep his promises. The Bible compares the covenant God has made with us to the covenant husband and wife make to each other. In the covenant of marriage, two people pledge life-long loyalty to each other.

How wonderful when two people have such loyal love for each other. This loyal love emphasizes action rather than just talk. It means looking for every opportunity to do acts of kindness for each other. This love reflects the kind of love God has for us, as we read in verse 7, “How priceless is your unfailing love.”

People talk about falling in love. But the kind of love you fall into, you also can fall out of. The love the Bible is speaking about is a commitment, a determination to be loyal. This love lasts. “Continue your love to those who know you.”

Father, help me to be loyal in my love for others as you love me. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
