There When We Need Him

READ : Psalm 46:1-11

This psalm inspired Martin Luther to write the great hymn “A Mighty Fortress is our God.” Luther faced great difficulties as he sought to bring people back to the pure gospel. He found his help in God. The psalm teaches that our security is in God to whom we can flee when life becomes difficult. He is the source of the strength we need to deal with the inevitable difficulties of life. He is there when we need him, “An ever present help in trouble” (v. 1). He can control our fear, when everything seems to be falling apart.

There is a community, “the city of God” (v. 4), the church, with whom God dwells in a special way. Through that church God provides the resources needed in times of national calamity and collapse (vv. 5,6).

He has the power to bring peace among the nations (v. 9). We should pray to him constantly for that peace.

Many people are placing their trust elsewhere. What they need more than anything else is such a relationship to the Almighty God. We Christians are called to be creative in finding ways of introducing them to our wonderful heavenly Father.

Father, may many others find the help we have found in you. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
