Our Problems and God's Power

Harry Buis

READ : Psalm 54:1-7

The heading of this psalm shows that although David was faithful to God, he was again in trouble. We can all expect trouble, but we must be certain it isn’t our fault. We are all weaklings who need our Lord’s sustaining support.

Because God is a God of integrity and right, we can be sure that, in the long run, those who cause us trouble will fail. “Let evil recoil on those who slander me,” says David. Although at the time of this psalm, Davis is still being maligned, he has faith in God. He plans how he will praise God when the deliverance finally comes.

Friend, whatever your problem, God will help you, although often not as quickly as you would like. Are you already planning how to express your gratitude? David says he will do so by sacrificing. How good that we no longer have any reason to sacrifice animals on an altar. A wonderful way of showing our gratitude to God for the deliverances he will surely give us is to give to the mission of the church so that others may come to know God. One reason David will sacrifice is because of the goodness of the name of the Lord.

Father, we are weak and need help. Give us strong faith so that we may praise you beforehand for the blessings you will give us in the future. For Jesus’ sake. Amen.
