O God, My Strength

READ : Psalm 59:1-17

David’s thought shifts back and forth from considering the viciousness of his enemies to the consolation he finds in God. His foes are fierce men who conspire against him, therefore he cries out to God for help. He describes the fact that they do not give up attacking him. He says, “O my Strength, I watch for you; you, O God, are my fortress” (v. 9). David then asks that the defeat of these enemies may impress people so they will remember God’s victory so that God may be glorified in the whole earth (v. 13).

Even though his enemies continue their attacks (v. 14), David is determined to sing of God’s great love for him. He concludes, “O my Strength, I sing praise to you; you, O God, are my fortress, my loving God” (v. 17). Spiritual enemies vary. Our greatest enemies are the world, the flesh and the devil. Our response should be like David’s acknowledging the power of our enemies, but praising and trusting God for deliverance.

In all your struggles against spiritual enemies, ask God for help. Say to him like David, “O my Strength, I sing praise to you; you, O God, are my fortress, my loving God.”
