Satan's Tricks

Mark Heijerman

READ : 2 Corinthians 4:1-6

Despite our best efforts at “setting forth the truth plainly,” the truth is not plain to all. One reason for this is because the “god of this age,” or Satan, is blinding people to the light of the gospel. Even though unbelievers are responsible for their own unbelief, the Apostle teaches that in spiritual matters, Satan is fighting vigorously to keep the world in the dark.

This he does in part by masquerading as an angel of light. Knowing that everyone is searching for happiness, this evil enemy is aware that his wicked program gains by imitating the good. If we could see him for what he really is a foul, murderous, and vile demon of utter darkness we might reject his schemes. But when he wraps himself in a deceptive gown of light, his ways seem pleasing. How well Satan dresses up immorality, greed, and other sins!

Satan’s deceptions remind me of the defensive strategies of today’s fighter jets. When fired upon, the jet pilot releases a flare which tricks an attacking missile by imitating a plane. Such is Satan’s method. He pretends to be light and many chase after him instead of the real Light.

Lord, shine your light in our hearts always so that we may see you and detect the Great Deceiver’s tactics. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
