Truly Rich

Mark Heijerman

READ : 2 Corinthians 6:1-10

People of power, talent, and wealth can be a great blessing to the church, but Paul reminds us that those who are poor in the things of this world need not feel left out. Indeed, he concludes his own testimony in these verses with those beautiful words, “We live on . . . poor, yet making many rich; having nothing, and yet possessing everything.”

Without denying that earthly blessings are wonderful, Paul points out that what makes men and women truly rich are things not of this world. Because nothing here lasts, nothing of this world counts for true wealth. Give a poor man a million dollars for a day and few of us consider him wealthy. Give him a million for 80 years and nothing changes except a few more days of earthly comfort. On the time line of eternity, a little money does nothing to make a person rich.

What we need is lasting wealth. What we need is heavenly treasure that can be endlessly shared but never exhausted. Paul had this wealth and therefore, even though his wallet was thin, he made many rich. Even though he had only a little cash, he possessed Jesus, the greatest treasure.

Gracious Father, lead us to make others rich with the riches of Christ. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
