Sowing and Reaping

Mark Heijerman

READ : 2 Corinthians 8:16-24

Reaping depends on sowing. The size of the harvest is influenced by effort. One farmer works to plant as many acres as possible. Another fritters away time and plants much less. The greater harvest will belong to the greater planter.

The same, says Paul, is true in matters of the spirit. One man is diligent in his walk with Jesus Christ; another is complacent. The first devotes himself to prayer and study, gives of his time and talents to God, and shares generously of his possessions for the cause of Christ. The other seldom reads the Scriptures, is lax in worship and service, and is stingy in giving. Who will receive the richest blessings? Those who sowed much!

For slackers the Apostle’s words about sowing and reaping stand as a warning. But for diligent, committed believers they are a wonderful promise. When we are generous with God, he will be generous with us. If the measure we use for giving to him is large, large will be his measure in giving to us. Be generous with me, says the Lord All-Powerful in Malachi 3, and “see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that you will not have room enough for it.”

Dear Father, thank you for your wonderful promise to bless those who bless you. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
