The Nature of the Harvest

Mark Heijerman

READ : 2 Corinthians 9:10-15

Earlier in this chapter, Paul promised generous blessings for generous givers. The nature of these blessings is sometimes a matter of dispute. Some say that when Christians give of their money and lives to God, they will be blessed with more money and good health. Others argue that the promises of God about reaping generously refer to spiritual things alone. Both sides are right only in part.

God generally does prosper the finances of those who are generous with him. Certainly Paul hints at this when he says that God increases the store of seed for those who plant generously. Furthermore, his language of “being made rich in every way” seems to include blessings of all kinds.

Yet, the Apostle was fully aware that not every generous believer is or will be healthy and wealthy. Hence, when speaking of the blessings promised to generous givers, Paul’s emphasis is not upon the earthly, but upon the spiritual. Be sure that God “will enlarge the harvest of your righteousness” are his words. Again, because of your service, “men will praise God.” Invest, therefore, with God and be sure of a good return from him.

Dear Father, thank you for rewarding us with blessings that last. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
