An Attitude of Abundance

READ : Mark 14:3-9

In a lavish gesture of affection, a woman anoints Jesus with expensive perfume, emptying the entire flask onto his head. The disciples grumble at this waste a few drops would have sufficed. But, Jesus is stirred by her extravagance.

Stephen Covey talks about two contrasting attitudes in people: an Attitude of Abundance or an Attitude of Scarcity. This woman has an Attitude of Abundance. She never stops to calculate what will be a passable minimum. People with an Abundance Attitude think: There is more than enough. There is plenty of everything. Therefore, I will be a generous giver.

On the other hand, people with a Attitude of Scarcity think: There is not enough. There is not enough money, not enough love, not enough time, not enough of anything. Therefore, I must hold back. Hoard. Give sparingly. These people go through life hoarding their time, their affection, their wealth, carefully measuring out the contents with an eye-dropper lest they spend a drop more than is absolutely necessary.

Jesus honored the woman’s lavish gesture. “She had done a beautiful thing,” he said.

O God, abundant in grace, lavish in mercy, help me to live and to give with generosity and joy, loving as I am loved, and forgiving as I am forgiven, through Jesus Christ. Amen.
