READ : Luke 1:26-38
Gabriel is one of only two angels mentioned by name in the Bible. We have mental images of Gabriel from paintings and Christmas cards. But it is Gabriel’s message which captures our attention. What did Gabriel think when God sent him to young Mary? Had Gabriel envisioned the mother of God’s Son to be a royal queen? Was the highly favored one of regal standing? Was the one-to-come a powerful warrior descending from the heavens in a fiery chariot? Or a mighty Messiah emerging from an explosion in the sky?
What a shocker! The mother-to-be of God was a peasant girl in her early teens. God would be coming to earth as a baby. As Gabriel made his way from heaven to earth, what ran through his mind? How peculiar are the ways of God! And yet, as he reminded Mary, and no doubt himself, “Nothing is impossible with God.”
Christmas is four months away. Yet the divine truth that nothing is impossible with God is a year-round truth that calls us to believe, angels and humans alike.
God of stables, shepherds, stars and angels, thank you for the truth, wonder and mystery of our Savior’s birth. In his precious name we pray. Amen.
