Philip and the Eunuch

Tom Bartha

READ : Acts 8:26-39

Students preparing for the ministry often study the Greek and Hebrew languages. On my first day of class in seminary, we students opened our Greek New Testaments to a page of confusion. Most of us had no idea of how to make heads or tails of this unfamiliar type of writing. Had someone asked that day, “Do you understand what you are reading?” we would have looked up in confusion. Yet, as the patient professor taught us, comprehension dawned.

In our reading today, this important official may as well have been reading Greek too. But the Spirit saw his earnest heart and confusion. He sent Philip his way to bring clarity. The officer was receptive to learning. Philip shared the Good News of Jesus. He must have been encouraged by the response. What greater joy is there than helping another learn about Jesus?

Someone may be waiting for us to bring understanding and clarity in their spiritual confusion. Is the Spirit sending you? Are you ready to respond?

PRAYER

O God, thank you for people open to learn. Thank you for those who bring clarity out of confusion. May we always be uncovering new riches in our faith in Jesus. In his name. Amen.
