Jabez: Praying About Our Pain

Tom Bartha

READ : 1 Chronicles 4:5-10

We have been looking at the remarkable prayer of Jabez, another obscure partner in God’s great plan. The name Jabez means “pain,” given him by his mother in the pains of childbirth. In adulthood Jabez asks God to keep him free from pain.

Scripture is clear that faith will not isolate us from the crunch and pinch of life’s unpleasant surprises. God daily invites us to call to him in our pain, in every troubling experience of life. No harm can befall us without God’s awareness. Stay near to this God who is no stranger to our pain. He understands for he endured the pain of losing his only Son.

Jabez’ prayer was answered by God, just as he asked. We should cherish the promise that God will never abandon us, even in the bleakest of circumstances. “I will never leave or forsake you,” God told Joshua (Joshua 1:5).

We are never left alone with our pain. Jabez’ model prayer points us toward a life sustained by trust in the Lord.

Lord, thank you for the wonderful riches hid within your Word, and for the people who teach us to trust you when we hurt. Amen.
