Anna-A Flame of Expectancy

Tom Bartha

READ : Luke 2:36-40

In the church where I grew up during the 1950s and 60s, two men served as ushers every Sunday morning. Thirty years later, I returned to my home church, and the same two men were still serving!

Anna was like that. She was always in the temple. In fact, after she was widowed it became her home, her life. She never left the temple but worshiped night and day, fasting and praying. For what? For whom? Why?

We find an answer when Anna met Simeon with Mary, Joseph and Jesus. Anna knew her greatest prayers had been answered. She was convinced that this child was the Messiah. Filled with gratitude, she gave thanks to God, and then spoke about the child to all who, like her, lived with expectancy in God’s mighty doings.

Anna was a prophetess. She received revelation from God and declared that truth to others. She was old, but her words were spoken with the excitement of a teenager. She had seen the Christ! How could she stay silent?

Lord, sometimes we wait so long for prayers to be answered that we all but abandon hope. Thank you for encouraging us with Anna’s perseverance and hope. Amen.
