READ : Revelation 1:1-8
A.W. Tozer once wrote, “No religion has ever been greater than its idea of God.” Jesus is God, the Son, and is revealed here in remarkable language. In verse 5 he is described as “The faith ful witness, the firstborn from the dead, and the ruler of the kings of the earth.” Then a powerful concluding word is added, “To him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by his blood.”
Verse 8 Jesus is almighty and eternal. He really had no beginning and will have no ending. Alpha and Omega are the names of the first and last letters of the Greek alphabet which mean “The beginning and the end, the first and the last” (Rev. 22:13). He will always be number one!
In a sermon I once declared with great enthusiasm, “God is eternal!” A little girl sitting with her parents in the front pew suddenly lifted her head and said loud enough for me to hear, “God is not a turtle!” She obviously misunderstood what I said. He is forever above everyone.
Jesus wants to be first in our beginnings and endings. Our birth, our starts in school, marriage, a job. . . . He is there in our endings too, when we leave home, move, leave friends, lose a loved one, retire, die. Jesus #1.
Dear Lord Jesus, be in all my beginnings and in all my endings, my starts and stops! Amen.
