READ : John 6:35-40
Today we begin a series of seven meditations based on the seven “I Ams” of Jesus as found in the Gospel of John. The setting is a large crowd of 5,000 people who were fed with five loaves and two fish. It took a special person to pull that off! And there were even leftovers.
This prompted Jesus to announce a powerful claim, “I am the Bread of Life.” What bread is to the physical life, he is to the soul. Jesus was born in Bethlehem which means House of Bread. He is not like an extra dessert. Rather, he is the staple of life who alone can satisfy our deepest hunger and yearning. This reminds me of the famous statement made by Augustine, “Thou hast made us for Thyself, and our hearts are restless until we rest in Thee.”
Consider, what do you long for in life? Peace, contentment, acceptance, friendship? Or security, financial success, job fulfillment, good health? These are good and important desires. But there is much more to life. Listen to Jesus’ claim, “I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats this bread, he will live forever” (v. 51). Dear friend, take Jesus into your innermost being. Accept the truth and reality of his presence. He will satisfy your deepest desires.
Bread of Life, come and satisfy the deepest longings of my life. Amen.
