A Failing Church

READ : Revelation 2:18-29

Some of the members of the church of Thyatira failed. It was like cancer throughout much of the congregation. Here was a small industrial city, well known for its many trade guilds. To be successful in business required membership in a guild. For a Christian this would mean eating meat sacrificed to idols and also engaging in sexual immorality at the guild parties. Jezebel, a prominent woman in the congregation, encouraged this since “business is business.” She was very much like King Ahab’s wife whose name was Jezebel, guilty of corrupting God’s people many years prior. The church in Thyatira was a mess! Oh, some members of the church stood up for what they knew was right. Jesus complimented them for their love, faith, service, perseverance. Jesus identified himself as the Son of God. He is surely going to deal swiftly with all who have been pursuing evil. What to do? Stop wrong doing. Stand firm. You will be blessed!

Ben Franklin said it, “An ounce of prevention is worth more than a pound of cure.” It is always easier to prevent a problem than to solve one.

Gene, a believer, fell into sin. He damaged his testimony. He lost his family a high price! The apostle Paul’s counsel is worth remembering, “Keep yourself pure” (1 Tim. 5:22).

Lord Jesus, I promise to be pure. Help me! Amen.
