A Dying Church

Cecil Martens

READ : Revelation 3:1-6

The church in Sardis had the reputation of being alive, but the Lord Jesus told them, “You are dead.” A terrible indictment! They weren’t what they thought they were. Sardis was a wealthy community known for two things: their woolen industry and their pagan immorality. Twice in history the city was captured by enemies because of their carelessness. It seems the church reflected the spirit of the community. They had a reputation for spiritual achievement. False! A small minority of people were faithful, and they would be rewarded (vv. 4 and 5). But the majority needed to recognize who they really were, to wake up, repent, and become what they claimed to be, men and women of God.

We all value our good reputation. The challenge is to be as good as people think we are. Satan is powerful. In clever, treacherous ways he attacks and encourages us to complacency and compromise. “Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour,“Peter wrote. “Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light” (2 Cor. 10:11). Dear friends, read and obey the Bible. Pray faithfully; deal strictly with sin in your life, “Looking to Jesus,” avert spiritual death!

O God, help me to be vigilant, and to be spiritually real. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
