Follow the Leader!

READ : Hebrews 12:1-6

On January 28, 1986, the space vehicle Challenger with seven crew vanished into a fiery nightmare as the spacecraft exploded. School teacher Christa Mc Auliffe of that crew had caught the imagination and heart of America. She took her son’s stuffed frog with her, her daughter’s cross and her grandmother’s watch. Before the launch, Christa wrote a letter to her Sunday school class, challenging them not to “get stuck with what is comfortable,” but to “venture into the new.” A pioneer, she modeled her advice.

In our Scripture today Jesus is called, “the Pioneer . . . of our faith” (v. 2, rsv). Jesus is our great trail blazer who has gone before us. Through his death and resurrection he has rescued us from Satan and sin. As the Pioneer of our faith he has opened the door for us to an abundant, fulfilling life. We need to keep our eyes fixed on him, avoiding distractions or detours that will prevent us from reaching our goal.

There will be times when our Pioneer will lead us beyond our comfort zone to new places, to risk as we’ve never done before. Being in Ecuador now is that kind of experience for us! We are following our Leader!

Father, make me willing to risk for you and with you. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
