Forgiven?And Sure of It

William C. Brownson

READ : 1 John 1:5-10

Her name was Rose. She was worried about her sins. “Every night I ask God to forgive my sins, but I’m never sure I’ve been forgiven.”

Maybe you know someone like Rose. Maybe you have struggled with the same uncertainty yourself.

I invited Rose to read aloud 1 John 1:9, “If we confess our sins, he who is faithful and just will forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”
I said, “Rose, you’ve confessed your sins.”

“What does God promise to do when you confess?”

“He will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”

“Has he forgiven you?”

“I guess he has.”

“And here’s the secret behind it, Rose: ‘the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin’” (v. 7).

At that, a big smile lit up her face. For the first time, she knew she had been forgiven. She had believed God’s gracious promise in Christ.

We bless you, O God, that when we confess our sins, you are faithful and just to forgive and cleanse us through Christ. Amen.
