When The Pressure Is On

William C. Brownson

READ : 1 Corinthians 10:6-13

Sometimes it feels like we’re going through the fire. We’ve tried; we’re tested. We’re stretched and hammered until it seems we can’t stand any more. Maybe it’s physical affliction. Maybe it’s family discord. Maybe we’ve lost something precious to us or suffered a humiliating failure. Maybe swarms of temptations are buzzing around us like so many hornets. In times like these, is there a word from the Lord?

Listen to this promise: “No testing has overtaken you that is not common to everyone. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tested beyond your strength, but with the testing he will also provide the way out so that you may be able to endure it.”

The first note of comfort: our testings are not unique. They’re part of our common human lot.

The second: God is faithful, and won’t abandon you. “Wherever the will of God may lead you, the grace of God will keep you.”

Finally, when you seem to be trapped, hemmed in on every side, he will provide an escape. As the gospel song says, “God will make a way where there is no way.” Count on it. Trust him. That’s his promise.

We praise you, O God, that in our worst trials you are there to hold us up and see us through.Amen.
