READ : Jeremiah 29:10-14
We had learned while in faraway Georgia that one of our dearest friends in Michigan had been stricken with acute leukemia. By the time we arrived home, she had been hospitalized for several days. This verse came to mind: “I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord, plans for your welfare and not for harm, to give you a future with hope.”
When God’s people in exile first heard those words, the future must have seemed dark indeed. They were in Babylon, a captured people steeped in sorrow, seemingly abandoned by God. But now the word of the Lord comes. God would visit them and bring them back to their homeland. He had good plans for them a future filled with hope.
That day in Grand Rapids, our suffering friend Fran took heart from this promise to Jeremiah. In Christ we are more than conquerors. Even when faced with devastating loss, family heartbreak, or terminal illness, we know in Jesus Christ God’s gracious plan for us a future with hope.
Father, we would seek you today with all our hearts, trusting that we will surely find you and a bright future. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
