Rivers of the Spirit's Energy

William C. Brownson

READ : John 7:37-44

The prophet Ezekiel had a thrilling vision. He saw water flowing from beneath God’s temple in Jerusalem. It streamed down to the east toward the desert and the Dead Sea. The farther it flowed, the deeper the river became. And here was the most exciting part: Wherever the waters flowed, everything came to life.

Was this vision in our Lord’s mind when he cried out on the last day of the feast, “Out of the believer’s heart shall flow rivers of living water”? The bodies of Jesus’ followers are now God’s temple. As they trust in him, the life- giving waters flow to renew and invigorate others.

What a promise that is! I stood once on the south side of the temple Mount in Jerusalem and tried to envision these waters coursing down the rocky ravine to the east. I saw in my mind’s eye life and greenness springing up everywhere. And I thought: that’s what happens when we trust in Christ and are filled with his Spirit.

When Jesus reigns in our hearts, his risen life is communicated through us. Perhaps without knowing the source, exhausted people around us will find refreshment. Hearts will come alive. Believe it. It’s his sure promise.

Lord, may we so trust in you that rivers of the Spirit’s energizing power may flow from within us. Amen.
