Same God, Same Promise

William C. Brownson

READ : Hebrews 13:1-6

“For God has said, ‘I will never leave you or forsake you.’” So wrote the author of Hebrews to the struggling, suffering believers of his time.

What was the New Testament writer quoting? This was God’s Word to Israel in the wilderness (Deut. 4:31), to Joshua at the borders of the promised land (Josh. 1:5), to Solomon beginning his reign (1 Chron. 28:20). These were leaders and people facing great challenges and dangers.

Because “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever,” those words of promise were given for first-century believers also.

Wasn’t that Jesus’ word also to the early martyrs and confessors, to the monks who kept the light of the gospel alive in the Dark Ages? Wasn’t it his word to the leaders of the Protestant Reformation as they contended for the gospel? And to the missionaries of the cross in every age? And isn’t it God’s Word to us now?

His promise never to abandon his people is as fresh and reliable as ever. Whatever we face, this is our bedrock confidence he will be there!

Gracious God, help us to take heart in all our trials and temptations, knowing that you have promised never to fail us. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
