Daniel in the Lion's Den

Joseph Holbrook, Jr.

READ : Daniel 6:14-28

From a human point of view, the prospects for Daniel are very poor. Among the Medes and the Persians not even a king could cancel out an existing law, no matter how unjust or cruel. It is obvious that King Darius had taken note of the integrity of Daniel in comparison to the other government officials. At the lion’s den he expressed hope that Daniel’s God would save him.

All night long he agonizes. He can’t sleep. He refuses to eat. He realizes what a sucker he had been. His most trusted advisors had taken advantage of him in order to advance themselves. Now he is hoping for God’s saving intervention.

What an intervention it was! It was the Good News of sins pardoned and new life given. With a quivering voice he called out in the early morning, “O Daniel, has your God been able to deliver you?” Daniel answered from the lion’s den. Later the king sent out a message of praise to the God whom we worship, “He is a living God, his kingdom shall never be destroyed, he delivers and rescues, he works signs and wonders in heaven and on earth.” Aren’t you glad that you are safe in the arms of a protecting God?

Lord, there are countless Christians in our world today who are going through cruel persecution. Give them, and us, the courage to stand firm in the day of trial. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
