READ : Daniel 7:11-18
Today’s figure comes not from the raging sea, a symbol of demonic powers. No. On the clouds of heaven this figure comes, not a ravaging beast, but one “like a son of man.” Jesus’ favorite term for himself was “Son of Man.” In 2 Corinthians 15:21 the Apostle says, “For as by a man came death, so by a man came also the resurrection from the dead.” Daniel foresees God’s Deliverer from oppression.
Daniel sees clouds. Clouds, in the Hebrew Scripture, are associated with divine power. In Psalm 104:3 it says, “O Lord, my God, thou art very great; who makest the clouds thy chariot, who ridest on the wings of the wind.” This Son of man that Daniel sees is not ordinary. He is both human and divine.
Genuine liberation from the brutal powers of evil will not come from a human king. No, Jesus alone has been given authority to do this. Eventually he alone will rule forever in uncontested power and beauty.
To Daniel was given the privilege to see in advance what we today call the Incarnation of our Lord Jesus Christ. He is Son of man for us.
We thrill, Lord, at how the Hebrew Scriptures foreshadow the coming of the Messiah, and how the Christian Scriptures thrill to tell how it happened. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
