Exhausted by a Vision

Joseph Holbrook, Jr.

READ : Daniel 8:15-27

What is pictured in prophetic outline here really happened in history. Josephus, the Jewish historian, recounts in vivid detail the rise of Antiochus Epiphanes and his abominations against the covenant people. This “king of bold countenance, who understands riddles” did cause fearful destruction, almost as bad as that under the Roman general Titus in 70 A.D.

Did you notice that the angel Gabriel makes reference to “the time of the end” and “the latter end of their rule”? He is not pointing to some day that is still future for us, but to the end of the particular trial that God’s people were to go through years ago.

Antiochus introduced the worship of Jupiter Olympus in the temple of Jerusalem, and made sacrifices to him on the altar of Yahweh. While leading his troops against the Persians far to the East, he died, insane, in 164 B.C. fulfilling Gabriel’s words, “he shall be broken, but not by humankind” (v. 25). It took 400 years for Gabriel’s words to be fulfilled, but things happened just as he had said. Does evil ever exhaust you?

Lord, we pray with the psalmist, “If it had not been the Lord who was on our side, they would have swallowed us up. Our help is in the name of the Lord who made heaven and earth.” In Jesus’ name. Amen.
