He Took Our Place

READ : Daniel 9:1-12

Was there ever a prayer of confession like this? Are you aware of any innocent, godly man or woman who actually assumes the guilt of the person or group for whom he or she is praying? We almost want to stop Daniel and remind him that he is not responsible for the Exile. That if everybody among the Jews had lived like he had there never would have been this punishment.

Daniel points to another who identified with us sinners, yes, who “became sin for us” (2 Cor. 5:21). Jesus accepted responsibility for us. He underwent the agony of the Cross so that “through death he might destroy him who had the power of death, that is, the devil” (Heb. 2:14).

Which brings us to the call of Jesus to follow him. Like Daniel, we are not to point the finger, dump the blame on “hypocrites” or “slackers” or whatever. Daniel prayed for God to forgive. Jesus took all the evil we could throw at him, and gave back love. We are called to heal, to guide, to teach, to intercede, to love, all in the name of him who loved us like none other.

Lord, it’s so easy to point the finger. Thank you that a man like Daniel, who lifted up all his people before you in intercession and confession. Give us a heart like his, and like our Lord Jesus Christ. In his name. Amen.
