Getting An Angel to Respond

Joseph Holbrook, Jr.

READ : Daniel 9:20-27

Like other heavenly communications with Daniel, this one leaves a lot of questions unanswered. The “seventy weeks” of Daniel 9 has been the occasion for tragic splits in the Christian community as people have staunchly defended their particular interpretations.

It will help us in grasping what this is all about to realize that the term weeks is really “sevens.” If those “sevens” are years, which is certainly possible, then the first seven “sevens,” or 49 years, point to the rebuilding of Jerusalem under Nehemiah. The next period is 62 “sevens,” or 434 years, which brings us to the period that culminated in the birth, life, death, and resurrection of Jesus. With the rending of the veil of the Temple from top to bottom while Jesus was on the cross, the whole sacrificial system of the Hebrew Scriptures was completed. Following that, in 70 A.D. came the destruction of the temple and the destruction of Jerusalem under the Roman conqueror Titus.

If you are puzzled, so was Daniel, and many others. But thank God for the One who came to “put an end to sin, to atone for iniquity and to bring in everlasting righteousness.”

Thank you, gracious God, for sending your Son to conquer evil and set us free. Keep us looking to him. Amen.
