What's in a Name?

Nancy Dorner

READ : Luke 2:7-21

“Give him the name Jesus” (Matthew 1:21).

Jesus (Jeshua or Joshua) means “Savior.” All through the Bible names have meaning and therekfore are important. Isaac means “laughter.” David means “beloved by God.” God sometimes changes people’s names as the person changes. Jacob (“clever” or “manipulator”) became Israel when God changed him. What does your name mean?

Revelation tells us God will give us each a new name when we get to heaven. What would you like your new name to be?

I think we should be more selective when we name our children giving them historical names which are honorable. By selecting biblical names our children might identify with the character for whom they are named. Words are like seeds. The bare seed produces a wonderful harvest of food.

So, be careful how you handle words especially sacred words for and about God. Children pick up on our tone of voice, facial expressions and body language when we talk about the Lord. If we are respectful, they are likely to be reverent also. If we are careless and vulgar, we will hear the ugly echo from their lips.

Father, help us communicate your character and holiness to all we meet, but especially to our children. Amen.
