READ : Jeremiah 29:8-14
“‘For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘. . . plans to give you hope and a future’” (Jer. 29:11).
New Year’s Eve. Remember how hopefully we began 1998? Surely this year will be better.
In many, many ways things are better than they were, years ago. Remember diphtheria, small pox, tuberculosis, polio? These were the “terrorists” of my childhood. Today they are almost non- existent. My grandmother’s refrigerator was just a wooden chest with a huge block of ice inside. My mother’s refrigerator had to be manually defrosted. Mine is frost-free.
My grandmother boiled water on the stove for laundering and laboriously made her own soap. My mother’s electric wringer washing machine was a huge improvement. Now, I daily thank God for my automatic washer and dryer.
Yes, the past fifty years have brought steady improvement in the comfort and physical quality of life in this country. But have science and technology changed our hearts? What improvements would we see if everyone would seek God with all their hearts in 1999? Is God your planner for the New Year?
Father, thank you for all the good things you gave us in the past. I invite you to shape my future in 1999. Amen.
