Angels and True Religion

Chester Droog

READ : Ephesians 2:8-10
Galatians 1:6-10

The words that jump out at me in our Scripture read ing today are found in verse 8 (Galatians 1). Paul tells his readers that if an angel from heaven were to descend into their midst and preach another gospel than that which he preached, that angel would be eternally damned. Wow!

Think of the importance of angels. An angel led the people of Israel out of Egypt. An angel was present at the giving of the Ten Commandments. Angels sang at the birth of Jesus. Angels ministered to him during his wilderness experience. Angels were at the tomb at Jesus’ resurrection. Hebrews says, “Angels are mentoring spirits sent to serve those who will in herit salvation.” Is there any doubt that Paul was sure that he was preaching the true gospel? If the angels preached another gospel, they would be eternally damned. If Paul preached another gospel, he would be forever excluded from God’s presence. He believed that. So sure was he of the gospel he preached.

The good news of the gospel is that there is nothing I can do which will make God love me more. Nothing I can do will make God love me less. Do you know of any other religion which can make that statement?

Father in heaven, thank you for the Holy Spirit and angels who testify to the truth of the gospel. Help me to accept it fully and believe it as Paul teaches. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
