Authentic Conversion

READ : Galatians 1:18-24

Yesterday we read of Paul’s conversion. Our Scripture lesson for today makes reference to his three years spent in Arabia after his conversion. Why did Paul retreat into the Arabian desert? It was to study the Old Testament Scriptures in light of his new relationship with Jesus Christ. Paul studied the writings of Moses, the teachings of the prophets and the Psalms. He returned to Damascus with the seeds of the letters to the Romans, Galatians and Colossians in his heart and mind. He went to Arabia as a student of the law and the prophets. He returned to Damascus as a teacher and missionary of the gospel of Jesus Christ. He went to Arabia as a new convert. He re turned from Arabia, mature in his understanding of Jesus, promised Messiah, Son of God, the only Savior.

Growing in Christ takes time. Our conversion can take place instantaneously as it did for Paul. To become a mature, vibrant, winsome, victorious Christian takes months and years of diligent study of the Bible. Many years ago I was given a Bible in which was written: “Reading this book will keep you from sin; sin will keep you from reading this book.” How true! Little is more important to Christians than time with the Bible.

God of grace and Lord of glory, help me to grow and mature through diligent study and a better understanding of your Word. For Jesus’ sake. Amen.
