The Pastor's Heart

Chester Droog

READ : Galatians 4:12-20

Paul was a scholar, theologian, writer, and missionary. He was also a pastor. Today we see his pastor’s heart. He deeply loved the believers in Galatia. They loved him and treated him like an angel. He rejoiced that they had accepted the gospel he preached to them. The day came when his heart was heavy with sorrow because some were turning to false teachers. He pleads with them to reconsider. He wanted them to know life in the Spirit and the freedom from useless religious traditions. He wanted them to have the joy and certainty of salvation and eternal life. Now his heart ached at seeing some rejecting the one gospel of Jesus Christ.

I have been a pastor for more than 40 years. I identify with Paul’s pain. Nothing hurts me so much as seeing one who made confession of faith in Jesus Christ become enticed and entangled by false teachings. The reason for the hurt is not rejection of me, but a dismissal of the gospel of God’s love and grace as revealed in Jesus Christ. It is a repudiation of all that I believe to be the holy and inspired Word of our loving, heavenly Father.

Dear friend, beware of false teachers. Listen to no other gospel but that which Paul shares with you in this letter.

Dear God, help me to remain faithful to Jesus Christ and his truth. Amen.
