Religion True or False

READ : Galatians 4:21-31

Paul compares Christianity with other religions of the world. He does this by comparing the birth of Ishmael, the son of Hagar, with the birth of Isaac, the son of Sarah. When Abraham despaired of ever having a son, he took matters into his own hands. He had a son, Ishmael, with an Egyptian maidservant. Ishmael is a symbol of those belief systems in which people obtain salvation through human effort and religion.

Isaac, the son of Sarah, was born by divine promise and intervention. Abraham was 100 years old and Sarah 90 when she gave birth to Isaac. Isaac’s miraculous birth symbolizes the Christian faith, based not on what people do but on what God has done in Jesus Christ. The message of the gospel is that God does it all. We contribute nothing but our sins! God does the saving and leaves nothing for us to do but accept and believe the Good News of free forgiveness.

Paul is teaching us that we can search all over the world to find a system of beliefs like the Christian faith, but we will never succeed. The gospel he proclaimed is like no other. “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God not by works, so that no one can boast.”

Father in heaven, I accept your free and complete forgiveness with deep gratitude. Thank you for saving me. Amen.
