READ : Galatians 5:16-26
Live by the Spirit! What does Paul mean? Jesus reminds us that there is a mystery about the Holy Spirit. He likens it to the wind which “. . . blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going” (John 3:8). No wonder I find it difficult to understand what Paul means when he writes: “Live by the Spirit.”
Paul does not answer our question. He only tells us that we can surely know if the Holy Spirit is in charge of our lives. He writes, “[If] sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealously, fits of rage” etc. are part of our lives, we will know that we are not living by the Holy Spirit. However, when our lives demonstrate love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control we can be sure that we are living by the Holy Spirit of God for these are the fruit of the Spirit.
Dear reader, are you living according to your old nature, or are you living by the Spirit? This is not a trick question. I’m sure that you know the answer.
God of majesty and mystery, help me to surrender my life more and more to the indwelling power of the Holy Spirit. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
