Paul's Great Crescendo

Chester Droog

READ : Galatians 6:11-17

Paul’s letter is coming to a close. He has tried with all of his God-given ability to present as clearly and convincingly as possible the truth that salvation comes only through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. After a closing salvo against his enemies he reaches a great crescendo in verse 15: “Neither circumcision nor uncircumcision means anything; what counts is a new creation.” Notice he does not say a “new creature.” Paul’s gospel results in new creatures, but it also results in a new creation, the New Testament Church. His gospel resulted in a new creation to which they by their faith are made members.

It may seem strange that Paul should inject the subject of the church at this late hour, but it is a natural outflow of the gospel he preached. Paul saw beyond the salvation of the individual. He saw the birth of the body of believers, the church. His gospel resulted in a new Israel, the community of the people of God.

Dear reader, have you openly identified with the church of Jesus Christ? If not, seek a gospel- believing congregation of God’s people and testify to your faith, through membership in that body of believers.

Lord, make me unafraid to boldly proclaim my faith through active participation in the life of your church. Amen.
