Music to Grow By

READ : Ephesians 5:15-20

Soon after marrying, Arie and Corrie immigrated from Holland to Canada. They had very little in the way of money or material possessions. But, since Arie so loved music, they bought a small organ.

Arie and Corrie had no radio, and T.V. was not yet available, so to pass the long evening hours during their first winter in Canada, they would sit together at the organ and sing hymns. “We sang through the hymnal from beginning to end,” laughs Corrie. “We learned all the hymns in English! We could have sung, well, silly songs, but we didn’t.”

Corrie remembers this as a time of great spiritual growth for the young couple, as the words of the hymns took root in their hearts. This spiritual foundation helped to sustain Arie and Corrie through the tough early years after immigration. Built upon and strengthened over the years, it sustained them through the awful months after their son was injured in an auto accident that left him a quadriplegic. And it sustains them yet today, in their retirement years, as they serve the Lord with joy as volunteers for Wycliffe Bible Translators and Habitat for Humanity. For psalms, hymns and spiritual songs, praise the Lord!

Lord, we thank you for the gift of music that strengthens us and draws us closer to you. Amen.
