A Great Calling

Tom McCrossan

READ : Ephesians 4:1-6

Imagine receiving a call from the president of the United States asking you to be his ambassador! You would be surprised, flattered, overwhelmed and excited.

The King of the universe has called every believer to be his ambassador, persons through whom he announces the Good News of peace to those both far away and near (2:17). “. . . in [Christ] you too are being built together to become a dwelling in which God lives by his Spirit” (2:22).

Does this astounding news excite you? Let the wonder of it wash over you right now! The Lord of the universe has chosen you to a transformed life and through you to invite others to a unique peace with himself.

I invite you to begin the year 2001 with me in meditations based on the great practical themes, Paul’s letter to the big city believers in Ephesus, chapters 4-6. Paul begins chapter four by urging us to “live a life worthy of the calling you have received.” He states that humility, gentleness, patience, love, unity and peace are the most important characteristics of a commendable life. Are these six qualities growing more visible in your life? Such a great calling demands great vigilance.

Renew in me the wonder of your love and calling to me. Amen.
